What our participants have liked about this survey:

Provokes self-reflection

Very provocative questions, but worthwhile thinking about.

Wow. very interesting part one. The state of democracy is very important to me. I am interested in following the results of your survey. Good luck with it.

While completing this survey, I contemplated the ways by which I could become more engaged in political matters and debates. I have realized that I need to make more time in my day for exploring alternate media (which trust the most) as well as discussing opinions with who are wiling to do so (for example,my father is very politically aware).

I like the personal ideal part/aspect, it lets the surveyor know more about the person completing the survey

this was a well done survey and i enjoyed it!

good diversity of questions

I thoroughly enjoyed this part of the survey. The more personal aspect towards the end was more engaging as it compared to ideals and such.

Really great survey! It's super long and takes a lot of concentration but it was worth it. Please share it more, I think more people should take it; it'll make them think. The wording of Question 26 was a little confusing at first. Good job! Also there's a type somewhere, you said firend 3 times in a row in one of the questions.

Very interesting, gets you to think about multiple aspects of your life.

Great survey so far, found topics very interesting and thought provoking. Also a little long.

I really found this survey quite interesting. It made me put into perspective how I do not follow politics as well as I should. I definitely need to improve this aspect of my life.

I really like the different subjects related on the survey. But it can be more general than our respective countries

These question led to improving my engagement on local political/social and economic activities. Taking this survey led me to find the answers to some of the questions I had.

I am a PhD candidate at Simon Fraser University, School of Communication, investigating the relationships between variables that are related to citizen engagement in mediated democratic societies. The research I am doing is part of the requirements of my PhD dissertation.

Many variables may contribute to consent, apathy, inattention, distraction, attention, concern, or dissent of citizens. This research is an attempt to identify the variables that influence, and are influenced by, different levels of citizen engagement in technologically mediated democratic systems.

Participating in this study may be an opportunity for you to explore your own attitudes, beliefs, perceptions and behaviors. You may like some questions which provoke deep thinking and reflection in areas of your interest. Moreover, your participation may help better understanding of the parameters which produce informed citizen participation in democratic discourse.

I am trying to find out whether there are any correlations among people’s democratic engagement, and other variables including their world views; habits of using media technologies and outlets; patterns of online and offline social networking; exposure or attention to different agendas and forms of framing; hopes, despairs, level of trust, personal needs, and their life conditions.

I hope you will kindly help me by participating in a four-part anonymous survey.

Alternatively, you may contact me by phone at 604-618-9620, or you can email me at ahghasem@sfu.ca so we can meet for a confidential interview about the subject.

You can also ask me to provide you with the printed copy of the survey, and to accompany you while you are answering the questions. I will be happy to meet you wherever it is convenient for you. Just let me know your interest and availability.

At http://websurvey.sfu.ca/survey/181032697 you can find a copy of the informed consent form for the online survey. It provides additional information about this research. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about my research project.

Thank you very much in advance for your time and kind consideration.
