Ghana has one of the lowest HIV prevalence rates in Africa. It is a leader in innovative education strategies against HIV/AIDS. What can other African and developing countries learn from Ghana’s experience?

This symposium focuses on initiatives, research and new perspectives in reduction of HIV stigma and discrimination in Ghana.

The foundation of this symposium is the CIDA-funded project, Reducing HIV Stigma by Education – Ghana, a partnership between Simon Fraser University, University of Ghana, University of Cape Coast, and University of Education, Winneba. The project goal is to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS and to work toward the eradication of social stigmatization of persons with HIV and AIDS. To this end, the project uses education and communication strategies to prepare teachers and community youth workers as educators on the issues of HIV/AIDS prevention and stigma.

Our panel of Canadian and Ghanaian experts will address topics such as:

• Social and political conditions in understanding HIV and AIDS in Ghana;

• How education and communication initiatives address the stigmatization of people living with HIV/AIDS;

• Increasing community engagement to confront stigma and promote awareness of HIV/AIDS.

This symposium will offer an opportunity to engage with and reflect on a wide range of local and international issues in the fight against AIDS in developing countries.
